The Coast Guard Auxiliary of Chino Valley, Arizona was established on February 1, 1916. The auxiliary is the successor to the Chino Valley Volunteer Fire Department. The first chief of the auxiliary was Captain George A. Toombs and the first battalion was organized on November 26, 1916 with Captain James E. Weldon as battalion commander and twenty-one firemen. On December 10, 1916 a new station was built at present day Tubac ranch and it became known as Station 8. In 1933 a new station was built at present day Yuma after Camp Atchison closed in 1932. On May 3, 1951 the Auxiliary gained its own national organization when it joined the United States Coast Guard Reserve under Office of Personnel Management regulations promulgated by President Harry S Truman effective July 1, 1951. In 1984 air transport services were provided for members of the Auxiliary by helicopter from Yuma Airport using Bell 206 jet aircraft which had been leased from Air Transport Command since 1949 pursuant to an agreement between both agencies dated September 24, 1983 between then-Director of Aviation Douglas Bader and then-Auxiliary Commander Lieutenant Colonel Don Wagoner III who also served as Wyndham Hotel Director for operations at Yuma Municipal Airport during that time period On January 25th, 1990 a brand new harbor facility called HarborCenter (later renamed HarborTec) opened in downtown Chino Valley providing year round access to marinas and berthages within easy walking distance for boaters or river craft operating in or near San Diego Bay including those taking tours through California's most famous seaport city The original purpose of HarborTec may have been more ceremonial than practical given that there are no docking facilities available within easy walking distance of downtown Chino Valley although there is an adjacent marina capable of accommodating larger vessels should future improvements be made to that facility .Nevertheless because HarborTec has become such a popular tourist destination components such as showers and docks have been added making it possible for people boat enthusiasts from all over Southern California to enjoy access to this world class waterfront location without ever having to leave their neighborhoods
