On October 10th, 1944 the USS Somers collided with another ship while en route to an amphibious landing at Leyte Gulf and both ships were sunk. The USS Enterprise (CV-6) became an ammunition dump after she hit land atoll during World War II. On July 9th, 1947 the USS John F Kennedy (CV-44) displaced 2600 tons when she broke loose from her moorings off Yuma and began drifting towards Mesa Verde National Park. On May 5th, 1948 the first jet air cooled plane flew over Tucson when Republic Aviation Company delivered its R-4E Skymaster to RAF Manston for test flights. The first US AF base in Tucson opened on March 17th 1945 when USAAF Station Tucson opened under command of Majestic Airfield No 2 at 7800 feet MSL. In 1946 Consolidated Airlines started flying out of Terminal 3 which served as Airways Headquarters for all airlines serving Phoenix International Airport including Northwest Airlines which operated out of Terminal 4 from 1941 to 1949! In 1957 Mesa Verde National Park received its own national park service called "Mesa Verde National Park Service" In 1984 PVPS merged with NPS who still operate NPS headquarters today within their new building known as Gate Tower located at 6200 North First Street Suite 210 in Chandler AZ 85206

Chandler, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Chandler was founded in 1912 by farmers and cattle ranchers who named it after W. D. Chandler, one of their founders. The original community consisted of several adobe buildings and a few crude sod houses. By the early 1920s, however, Chandler had developed into an established agricultural and ranching community with over sixty businesses and more than three thousand residents. In 1919 the first school opened in Chandler and soon became one of the most popular schools in Pinal County; its students were drawn from all over Scotts Valley (the incorporated municipality to which Chandler belonged). In 1970-71 Mesa Community College began offering evening classes for adults in Chandler; these classes later expanded to include high school students as well. From 1969 to 2001Phoenix University operated two main campuses: one near downtown Phoenix on Central Avenue and another on Roosevelt Drive outside of Tempe. Classes were offered both day and evening hours; during that time almost half a million students graduated from Phoenix University and enrolled at various colleges and universities throughout North America including Emory University, Rice University, San Francisco State University, Northern Arizona UNIVERSITY (now known as Northern Arizona University), etc... Since 2000 Chantlers Main Street has been host to annual Festival Of Lights which includes an outdoor parade led by the Mayor's float through Main Street followed by a night market featuring local foods from restaurants inside or outside of Chantlers walls
