The Chandler National Guard was activated on February 14, 1912. The Arizona Constitution of 1912 called for the formation of a national guard to protect the state’s civil rights and safety. The first unit to be organized in Chandler was the 10th Infantry Regiment, which consisted of 11 men. This regiment was quickly augmented with recruits from surrounding towns and villages.
On November 15, 1913, the 1st Battalion of the 12th Infantry Regiment arrived from Tuscon and began recruiting located in central Phoenix. On December 3rd, 1913, President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation authorizing the formation of a national guard force in Arizona. The 1st Battalion was redesignated as Company D (Arizona).
Between 1914-1916, Company D served at various locales including Yuma Barracks during World War I; Camp Verde during World War II; and Flagstaff Army Post during the Korean War. In 1951-1953, Company D served as an attachment to 5th Cavalry Division stationed in Tucson while still continuing to recruit soldiers for participation in Operation Neptune Spear. In 1960-1963, Company D operated out of Apache Junction Army Depot while also continuing to recruit soldiers for participation in Special Forces training exercises at Fort Bragg NC.
In 1977-1979 company D deployed support personnel to Lebanon During this deployment there were four fatalities within company ranks due to accidents and disease unrelated to military service.
