In 1915, UA student body helped form what would become known as "The United States Army Reserve" which served during World War I and II under various names including: American Legion Auxiliary No 1; National Guard detachment No 1st Regiment Infantry; First Battalion Infantry Regiment (now Phoenix-based); Second Battalion Infantry Regiment (now Tucson-based); Fifth Brigade Combat Team/5th Mountain Division/United States Army Reserve Component Command) and United States Air Force Reserve Component Command Flight Training Squadron One Hundred fifty five (FTSO-145).

Prior to that time, the town was just called Indian Wells which was shortened to this name by deed from Alfred Vail who purchased 640 acres around present day Goodyear Road and tried to rename it Indian Wells after himself but no one wanted it so he changed it back again and that’s how it stayed until 1912 when George A Smith renamed it Chandler with his family as part of their gift for future generations along with 10 acres adjoining Goodyear Road on the east side (northwest corner). The years since have seen some major changes take place within Chandler including: annexation by Phoenix in 1964; growth due to development initiated byzoners along I-10 south from Tempe down into Phoenix proper starting in the early 1970s; initiation of city planning processes which led to incorporation as a municipally governed city in 1988; and steady suburban growth thereafter culminating with today’s population size at 165,000 residents while still relying on commuting service provided by neighboring cities such as Phoenix and Tempe for economic vitality.
