The town was founded in 1868 by Don Carlos Castilla and his wife María Isabel García; it became a state capital in 1912. In 1969, Casa Grande was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Castilla family arrived in what is now Arizona from Spain in 1848. They were among the first Hispanic families to arrive in this area of the country. Don Carlos Castilla settled around the bend on the Gila River north of Phoenix and began mining copper ore from what is now Casa Grande. The Castillas soon began exporting their Copper Mine goods to California and other eastern markets. In 1865, Don Carlos passed away and his children Hernando and Juana took over management of their father's business. By 1870, they had developed a large copper mine with extensive surface mines and underground workings totaling over 6 square miles (15 km2). In 1868, Don Carlos' wife María Isabel García married José Antonio Pacheco, an American landowner who had come to southern Arizona to prospect for gold Mining operations were begun at nearby Tombstone but failed due to lack of water supplies needed for such an arduous venture On October 14th 1870 Pacheco sold Rancho El Capitan (now part of Apache Junction) 3 league east of Casa Grande for $5200 Mexican pesos plus costs associated therewith including labor contract & adobe buildings not included . This transaction set off several years legal wrangles between Pacheco's heirs about ownership rights which eventually led to Mexican sovereignty claims over much of central Arizona north of Tucson Thereafter festivities were held at El Capitan each year Feb 15th until Mexican independence was announced on November 16th 1871 when all Mexicans departing that region must leave immediately or face lawlessness . baptisms continued however because many people wanted to remain under Mexican control while awaiting news of emancipation elsewhere
