Casa Grande is a city in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. It is located on the Casagrande River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Mexico City and 50 miles (80 km) north of Durango. The population as of 2010 was 26,663. The area that would become Casa Grande was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. On July 12, 1847, Tucson's first post office opened and within two years had a population of 350 residents. In 1849, a man named José María Pascual founded a rancho encircling what would later become Casa Grande. In 1855-1856, William Hance built a small adobe penitentiary here to incarcerate Native American convicts from southern Arizona and Nogales County in order to discourage their further migration westward into Mexican territory. The adjoining land became known as "Hance Rancho". In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Don Carlos Angeles attacked Tucson while withdrawing from his siege of Phoenix; he was joined by Arizonan Mexicans underGeneral Vicente Gomez and these forces burned much business and destroyed many homes before retreating with 254 casualties including most of Angeles' army corps when they reached Prescott on October 3rd). On November 5th President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9265 which ordered all troops remaining in Arizona must leave within 72 hours or be turned over to military command; this caused great panic among civilians who were not able to get away for fear their property would be confiscated or requisitioned by the government for military use if they didn't leave quickly.
