Casa Grande's history dates back to 1875 when Jimmie Davis founded theCasas Grande Land and Mill Company here. The first coffee beans were roasted in 1865 by Elihu Root and others near this same location. In 1899, Jethro Tull bought 1,000 acres adjacent to Casa Grande for $10 per acre (the equivalent of $140 million today). The first roastery in Casa Grande opened in 1901. In 1912, John Dennison organized the Tucson Coffee Cooperative and started marketing coffee throughout Arizona Territory. Casa Grande was founded in 1887 by José María Cárdenas and his wife Josefa Cuevas as a rancho. It was named after the casa (house) where they were born and raised. In 1912, when Casa Grande became part of Nogales city Limits, it lost its status as a town and was renamed Casa Grande. The first post office opened in Casa Grande on November 17th, 1888. In 1912 the name of the town changed to honor Francisco Villa who had been assassinated two years earlier while living in Apache Junction. Villa's widow wanted her husband's ashes to be scattered near her home so that she could always remember him. The current community was platted in 1922 by Rufus Lamar Barnes and named after him because he donated land for it and also because he helped finance the construction of the first school building which now stands within the limits of Casa Grande. Throughout its history, Casa Grande has seen growth due to its location adjacent to some of America's most important commerce corridors including Interstate 10 and Ulysses S Grant Boulevard/UCLA Medical Campus; both routes providing access to Phoenix and Tucson respectively. As well as this recent growth comes increased economic opportunity due to services provided by numerous businesses located within walking distance such as Anheuser Busch Brewing Company (Brewingtown), KFC-Worldwide(), Subway (), Sears (), AT&T Wireless Blvd., etc..
