The site was selected because of its proximity to both the Mojave Desert and the Gila River. In 1941, the United States government purchased the camp from private owners and turned it into a military training ground known as Fort Apache. After World War II, the fortifications were destroyed and Camp Verde reverted back to civilian use. In 1957, Camp Verde was designated a national historic landmark and is now open to the public as a museum. The history of Camp Verde begins with its establishment on Paria River in 1912. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) had been studying various aspects of Arizona since 1885 when they organized their First National Geographical Expedition under General George Armstrong Custer. Upon completion of their research, USGS sent their report recommending thatparia river be explored for potential mineral deposits. The USGS also recommended that paria be opened up for settlement due to its location at an important crossroad between southern California and northeastern Arizona Territory). The reason behind this recommendation may have been because at that time there were no other settlements along either side of the Paria River, making it an ideal place to start such a project given its strategic position; however, no actual development took place until after World War I when developers began searching for new land in what would become modern-day Arizona
Camp Verde was founded in 1912 by Colonel John Wesley Powell. The United States Army built the camp on what is now the outskirts of Phoenix. The first troops arrived at Camp Verde in 1916, and it served as a training ground for World War I veterans. In 1919, Camp Verde became an army post-secondary school. When the U.S.Army Consolidated all military schools into one location in 1951, Camp Verde became Arizona State University's first college campus. After ASU moved to its current campus in Tempe in 1969, Camp Verde reverted back to an army post-secondary school until 1987 when it became a university again under the name Arizona State University-Phoenix (ASU-P).
