Buckeye is a city in Cochise County, Arizona, United States. The population was 14,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Coffeyville Mining and Mill District and Buckeye Coal Company were among the first companies to mine coal in what is now Tucson. In 1881, Captain George A. Hildebrandt organized the Tucson & Prescott Railroad to transport coal from Buckeye to Prescott for shipment to eastern markets. In 1902, Captains Alfred P. Schieffer and Edwin Fenton bought the company and made it their own organization. They built a mill on White Sands River which they operated until 1907 when they merged with the Prescott Coal Company to form Buckeye Coal Corporation. The company produced anthracite coal until 1979 when it was sold to new owners who reopened the mill in 1984 as an industrial museum known as "The Mill of Your Life". In 1971, Captain James Wylie established American Flyer Airlines which served Buckeye with flights from Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale Airport (KPHX) . AmericanFlyer was acquired by Iberia Airlines in 2003 and ceased operations on September 30th of that year . Buckeye, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The first people to live in what became Buckeye were Mormon settlers who came from Utah during the 1840s. A post office called Boise was established in 1872, and remained in operation until 1912. In 1902, a group of farmers located near Buckeye founded the Buckeye Water Company to provide water for their farmsteads and other residents of the area. The company operated until it merged with Imperial Irrigation District in 1928. Today, much of Buckeye's history can be found on three main streets: West Second Street which runs along the northern border of town; East First Street which stretches from US-101 south to its junction with US-60; and South Main Street which runs east-west through town center. These streets are also home to a number of local businesses including several banks and restaurants as well as churches and residences dating back to before World War II. On January 1, 1907, Pinal County was created from parts of Cochise County; however, no school was ever built within that area because there wasn't enough money available to do so (although an elementary school opened in 1911). On February 14th 1907 by order of Governor problem John Mounce*, Indian Creek School #1 (later renamed Mountain View Elementary) began operations replacing Indian Creek School #2 which had been destroyed by fire on November 15th 1906*. This school served students up until Phoenix High School replaced it in 1962*. In 1909–10 *the first Gilded Age community* golf course† [*renowned] opened just northwest of town on present day North Main Street known as †Ridge Course‡ ([Mountain View]) . Designed by Dallas builder Waddell Carter [this course may have been originally named Apache Hills Golf Club], this 568 yards championship member[sic] won $5 Ladies Open event held at Champion Club[now called Scottsdale Municipal Airport], July 10–12 1909 *. After WWI when Phoenix increased its population rapidly (*progressive schools were being built), Ridge Course closed but reopened under new management as Checkertree Country Club [( Later Cimarron Athletic Club )] on April 8 1923 [/* now Falcons Landing Resort ]; membership dues included use of club house & swimming pool ]. In 1932 checkers board game America's Card Game played its final match here ending 4some…. Following prohibition many people left town [] making it difficult for locals to compete professionally against those living outside [*Hollywood]. From then until quite recently [1969-present], only phone service has been offered thru village hall….. Today about 50% or more residents identify themselves as Arizonans…. Although some businesses have moved away over time due to changing economic conditions or competition (e g., restaurant closure following retirement), most key businesses remain open downtown right next door where they started or grew up such as Bank Of America,[which relocated from Surprise early 2000′s][and later migrated back downtown after BankAmerica bought Mesa Valley National Bank]; longtime staples like Post Office (#3 since 1892)[opened atrium adjacent courthouse]; familiar landmarks likeRestaurant Row (& adjoining gift shop/cafeteria) across West Second Avenue & picture window overlooking Downtown; several bars/restaurants statewide including well-known chain places like Steak 'n Shake[ situated immediately north side street corner between East First & South Main Streets]; Starbucks Coffee House(formerly Cafe Donut)[new location open late Thursdays& Fridays past 12pm]; hardware store across US 60 near intersection with East First Street(* previously lived south side behind current Safeway building)); library across I‐10 concurrent w/ county jail [*opened 1975 adjacent sheriff’s substation]); internet café [-===============================================================> ]
The Buckeye area was first settled by the Arizonans in the 1840s. The area was known as the " granary of Arizona" because of its natural resources, such as coal, wheat, and cattle. In 1869, a group of settlers led by John Wesley Powell founded the city of Prescott on the eastern edge of what is now Buckeye. The city prospered until it was destroyed by fire in 1902.
