Avondale is a small city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area and is bordered by Mesa on the east,Phoenix on the north, Gilbert on the west, and Surprise on the south. The name "Avondale" comes from two words: avon (a valley) anddale (a small town). The first settlers in what is now Avondale called it Bloomingdale Valley because there were wild roses growing plentifully there. There was no good water source so settlers had to draw water from running springs or cisterns. Eventually a well was drilled and construction began to build homes around that well. In 1885 a post office was established at what is now Avondale with John Haggerty as its first supervisor. By 1912 there were nine townships in Maricopa County with their own post offices: North Scotts Valley, South Scotts Valley, East Mesa, West Mesa, East Phoenixville Township (later renamed Glendale), North Prescott Valley Township (later renamed Peoria), South Prescott Valley Township (later renamed Winslow), Chandler Heights/Chandler Hills/Winchester Hills Township(later renamed Glendale)), Paradise Valley/Scottsdale Village/Murrieta Canyon Village( later renamed Scottsdale), Fountain Hills(now known as Chandler Heights) and Sun City(now known as SunCity Center). In 1928 Phoenix annexed all of Maricopa County except for Paradise Valley which remained an unincorporated community until it became part of Metro Phoenix in 1959.] By 1920 three businesses - Laughlin's general store & livery stable; Barnes Hardware Company; and Bryson Bros., dry goods merchants - operated out of three storefronts located at Seventh Avenue and McDowell Road NW. The name "Avondale" is thought to be derived from General James Hays' report that he had passed through this region on his way to attack the Apache Indians in February 1828. A post office was established at Avondale in 1868, and it remained an important community until after World War II when growth took over and the post office closed in 1951. In 1915, aviator Jimmy Doolittle flew his experimental P-38 Lightning fighter from Avondale Airport into what is now Scottsdale Municipal Airport. In 1945, aviator Clarence Eaker used Avondale as his primary airfield for training during World War II flying missions over Japan.
