Avondale is a small town in Mohave County, Arizona, United States. The population was 535 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. At its peak in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Avondale was one of the largest and most important towns in Arizona. Today it remains a small town with a mostly agricultural economy and a few thousand residents. Avondale has been home to Native Americans since pre-historic times. In 1828, federal troops led by Colonel James McDowell burned down what is now known as Indian Wells Creek Bridge while trying to drive out Apache Indians who had taken refuge there. This event helped start the Mexican–American War and set off what is known as the Phoenix Campaign of 1858-1860 which resulted in Arizonan independence from Mexico. In 1912, avian flu pandemic killed over 50% of the city's population including many prominent citizens such as Mayor John Waddell and Dr. Charles Goodyear Sr.. Avondale is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. It was founded in 1887 by John M. Avondale and his wife Charlotte as the townsite of New Hope. The name comes from the Apache word "anu," meaning "place where a man can go to fetch water." In 1912, the Town of Avondale extended its boundaries to include what is now the city of Phoenix. The first post office opened in 1887 and was renamed New Hope in 1912 after Charlotte A. Wright Onsthorn, widow of Colonel George Wright (1814-92), who donated land for the town site.
