Apache Junction is a town in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 3,028 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Apache Junction comes from the Oneida Indian tribe's word "aqa" meaning "to cross over." The town began as a cattle ranching community and was named after Apache Chief Joseph Arapaho's home on the same site where he later built his own park. In 1887, when General John J. Pershing moved US forces out of Phoenix into what is now Apache County, he established Fort Sill to control all Indian Territory south of 20 degrees latitude. The fort was located on today's Apache Junction east side of the Salt River near present day Scottsdale and Mesa. In 1912, ranchers Pahrump Ranching Co., Harry Sievers and others formed the nucleus of what would become the townsite of Apache Junction when they agreed to build a railroad depot there for $5 per acre (0.28 hectares). When completed in 1913, Railroadtown became one of Arizona's largest cities with a population of 578 people living in 14 buildings that included an hotel and 10 stores/cafes/bars/restaurants within 2 miles (3 km) of each other on Main Street between Fourth Avenue and Seventh Avenue (now Osborn Road). After World War II ended hostilities between Japan and America resulted in increased trade between Asia and Western Europe resulting in new demand for goods shipped through Arizona ports including Phoenix; this led to greater development around Railroadtown which had access to both Interstate 10 (the main route traveled by travelers) as well as numerous truck stop restaurants serving western cuisine such as hamburgers and pizza while also providing scenic views across I-10 at Bullhead City Airport just outside Phoenix proper
