In 1957, when desert Niobrara Formation rocks were discovered east of town, development responded with an influx of people who beganmining coal and oil shale on Rancho San Pedro Mesa east of town; by 1969, production had increased enough to warrant another round of school construction which resulted in the creation of West Valley High School across from military base Camp Humphreys (now Goodyear Air Force Base). In 1968, when Navajo Nation established land claims along the southern border of Pima County including parts now within Apache Junction boundaries, cattle ranchers began appropriating water supplies from nearby springs to make their properties more efficiently irrigated; these conflicts led to a power struggle between ranchers and local farmers over control over resources during the early 21st century. By 2006, however, most disputes had been resolved through negotiations mediated by ranchers or government officials. When incorporated as a municipality in 1912 it contained an area limited only by its Thornton Canal: today it has expanded into portions adjacent to neighboring towns such as Nacoochee Hills and Tolleson Heights while retaining much rural character with small businesses clustered around churches and schools

The Apache Junction area was first populated by the Hualapai people in the late 1800s. The area was later invaded by Mexicans and the U.S. government decided to make it a reservation in 1907. The town of Apache Junction was founded in 1912, and it gradually became a popular tourist destination for miners and their families. In 1938, the town was renamed after General John J. Pershing because he had helped protect the area during World War I.
