Apache Junction is a small town in Mohave County, Arizona, United States. It was founded in 1887 by Mormon pioneers. The Apache Junction Armory was established in 1898 and became one of the largest armories in the Western United States. The U.S. Army moved its Fort Huachuca garrison to Apache Junction in 1907, and the arsenal became an important military depot for the surrounding area. In 1958, Apache Junction was renamed Poston after Assistant Secretary of Defense Paul Poston. The fortifications at Apache Junction were built to protect the town from hostile Apaches who attacked it frequently during the 1800s and early 1900s. After World War II, however, Apache Junction's population dwindled as development increased around it and fewer soldiers were stationed here; consequently, much of the fortification's functionality ceased to be used by 1935. Apache Junction is a small town in central Arizona, United States. It is located on the banks of the river Verde and is home to the Apache National Monument. The name "Apache Junction" comes from the Cherokee word "ahepago", meaning ' junction'. The first people to live in what is now Apache Junction were the Hopi. In 1867, General John C. Fremont explored the area and discovered gold near present-day Apache Lake. However, no one wanted to develop this land because it was too difficult to get water for their crops and there was no guarantee that any gold would be found. The town of Apache Junction formed in 1881 when a group of miners who had found gold decided to stay in an area where they could have easy access to food and medical help if needed. In 1907, a railway was built through Apache Junction linking Phoenix with Tucson so people could get goods from Mexico City directly without having to go through Mexico City or Albuquerque. This led to more businesses opening up in Apache Junction which helped make it one of the most successful towns in central Arizona. Additionally, many mills were built around this time which added jobs for local residents. However, during World War II many residents left for military service because they didn't think it would be good for their families back home if they were called up into service. As a result, only a small percentage of those who lived in Apache Junction during World War II survived intact (though some did move away). By 1961 almost all of the original buildings had been destroyed by fire or tornado damage but parts of them have been reconstructed as part of nearby Mesa Valley Museum District development project (Museum District #1). Today much of what once existed within earshot of downtown Phoenix has been lost due fires including several blocks south along I-10 just west of Tower Road between Florence Avenue and McKale Boulevard; neither will be saved until after future tornadoes cause significant damage northward from Tower Road onto Florence Avenueside) But portions have been rebuilt including: A restaurant/bar known as 'The Hacienda' dating back To 1886; two Masonic lodges with meeting spaces inside; two churches - First Baptist (1893) & Second Presbyterian (1903); three grocery stores - Safeway Supermarket (1963), KFC Greek Grill (1973), Little America Store (); four school districts - Mesa Valley School District #1RKP #2RDPSD #3PDSD; an LDS mission - Saint David Mission Church & Academy 1988; two private homes also known as 'Hacienda' & 'Garden'; 11 business properties located within 500 feet (.301 miles) radius surrounding downtown Phoenix landmark courthouse old post office building Pioneer Cemetery east side street property line between Third Street north andsouth

The fort was abandoned in 1915, but it was reactivated again in 1951 as part ofOperation Weasely. The post served as a base for the US Army's 10th Mountain Division during World War II. After the war, Fort Apache continued to be used by the army until it closed in 1969.
