Apache Junction, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona on the eastern edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The population was 5,895 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson-Mesa-Scottsdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first coffee beans were roasted in 1887 by Fernando Chavez and his father Francisco Chavez at their home on First Street in Apache Junction. Coffee was not popular then and there was no market for it; however, Fernando's father started roasting coffee because he could not find someone to grow coffee beans for him. In 1912, Manuel Gomez opened a small grocery store in Apache Junction and began selling coffee. In 1930, Don Diego Hernandez purchased land in Apache Junction from Fenton Shores Mining Company and began growing coffee on it. He marketing his beans all over Arizona before moving them to Mesa in 1942 to open his own business called "Hernandez Coffee". His son Josefina married Juan Martinez who owned Martinez Coffee Roasters which became one of the largest coffee roasters in Arizona until its closure in 1996. Antonio Lopez founded Los Angeles Coffee & Tea Company (LACTCO) which operated out of a shop on East Camelback Road near Glendale Village shopping center with about 20 employees at its peak around 1970 before closing down due to health problems two years later. Benny Carmona opened Lucha Libre Café de Oro (Café Lucha Libre), located at 9th Avenue Northeast between Camelback Road and Indian School Road NE corner back lot leased from Scotts Valley Unified School District property prior to 1992 when drug trafficking activity moved into Apache Junction bringing an end to that era of cafés being located along Camelback Rd., just south of I-10 Exit 221E adjacent to AZ State Route 66/Old US 70 exit ramp Don Julio Flores reopened El Torito Mexican Restaurant Original location 1225 W Adams St Ste A shortly after COVIDAD ENTERPRISES acquisition took place 10 Mar 2011 replacing El Torito Mexican Restaurant closed 31 Dec 2009 following family conflict with ownership by owners Benny Carmona + Julio Flores

The history of coffee in Apache Junction, Arizona goes back to the early 1800s. When Spanish explorers arrived in the area, they found farming and ranching communities already in place. They began their own coffee plantations soon after, and Apache Junction became one of the most important coffee towns in the region. The town was first known as a trading post because it served as a stop on the stagecoach route between Tucson and Phoenix. Coffee beans were brought overland from Mexico City and other regions for sale here. Coffee production continued until about 1930, when World War II shut down all railway traffic in the region. This caused an oversized demand for beans that couldn't be met by existing mills. As a result, some of the original Apache Junction mills closed down and were replaced by new ones that produced only paper cups of coffee instead of real beans.
The town of Apache Junction, Arizona was founded in 1912 by the Pascagoula tribe. The name Apache Junction comes from the word "ajax," meaning "enemy." The town grew rapidly during the 1920s, and by 1932 it had a population of 1,500. Apache Junction soon became a busy shipping and transport center for goods coming down the Colorado River. In 1935, the United States Army established Fort Apache in nearby Cochise County to protect the town from Japanese forces who were trying to enter America through California. In World War II, Apache Junction played an important role as one of Nazi Germany's main supply points for its troops fighting in Europe. The town was also used as a base for Operation Overlord, which aimed to capture Hitler's headquarters at Bletchley Park in England. After the war, Apache Junction slowly declined until it was destroyed by fire in 1980. Today, few people live there and most of the buildings have been torn down or are being used as housing developments.

Phoenix and Tucson were respectively founded just two years later, and Apache Junction quickly became one of their most important cities. The city experienced dramatic growth during World War II; it became one of the key hubs for military activity in northern Arizona Territory because it served as an airfield and shipping port. The post-war period saw some significant changes at Apache Junction; many businesses closed down due to competition from Mesa and Scottsdale. However, the city continued to grow steadily through the 1990s and 2000s as new development encroached on itslimitslotsandstreetscrowdingcreatedaproblemforlocal Governmentstoaddress.Today Apache Junction remains an important center for trade and commerce within central Arizona, with a diverse mix of businesses including restaurants, hotels, retail stores, medical centers, schools, churches and more.
As Arizona Territory was created in 1867, Prescott's first census taker had to cross the Mexican border into Mexico and count the population. The census taker also counted 6 men, 3 women, and 14 children who were living on the frontier. The Mexican government didn't like this so they Indian agent Manuel Arroyo led a group of his soldiers across the border into Apache Junction in order to stop the census taker from taking any more information away from them about their people. There was some fighting but eventually Arroyo's troops discovered that there wasn't much of an enemy force at Apache Junction. They allowed the census taker to continue taking data and gave him all of the information he needed back at Prescott. This event is known as The Battle of Apache Junction because it ended with no bloodshed between both sides
