Apache Junction is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,620 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Mexicans in 1881 as "Santa Anita" after their rancho (property) were renamed for a saint. Apache Junction became an Anglo-American settlement in 1885 when the US railroad company built a line from Tucson to Phoenix and named the new station Apache Junction after its location on the junction of two tracks near Apache Pass. The first store opened in 1886 andague post office was established in 1889. In 1912, during World War I, Apache Junction served as an airfields for American planes flying strategic bombing missions over Europe; it also housed Japanese prisoners of war who had been interred there until 1945. In 1932, Navajo Indians led by Chief Manuela Zavala moved into the area to take up land grant claims that they had been denied at various points in previous attempts to acquire them; they called themselves "the Jicarilla tribe". After years of argument and legal battles, these settlements ended up at Apache Junction with full tribal membership only granted to those living within a certain radius around their reservation center which varied depending on year and location: 325 feet around 1915 at Mescalero Hill Ranch; 350 feet around Mesa Verde Indian Reservation east of town limits; 400 feet around Flagstaff Mountain Resort village north of town limits; 500 feet west of Cochise River National Monument boundary south of town limits On November 12th 1912 a group consisting primarily white men under the leadership of Captains Edwin Denny and Clarence King organized what would become known as "The Gila Eight" which fought Mexican forces occupying their homesteads along both sides of Gila River near present-day Cochise County AZ during the early days following Mexican independence from Spain
