The first post office in Vestavia Hills was established on December 5, 1876. The city was named for Vestavia Hill, an early settlement in present-day Birmingham, Alabama. In 1902, Vestavia Hills became the county seat of Lauderdale County. In 1924, it became the City of Vestavia Hills when it seceded from Jefferson County. The population of Vestavis Hills peaked at over 100,000 in 1960 and declined to around 50,000 by 2000; however its downtown area remains one of the most vibrant and economically active cities in the region.
