Vestavia Hills, Alabama is a city in and the county seat of Vestavia County, Alabama. The population was 15,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Vestavia Hills is located in central-western Alabama on the Peachtree River. The first white person to live in what is now Vestavia Hills was James Mays, who settled there in 1836. At that time it consisted of only a few land grants and Fort Mays was built by Confederate General William Troup as a military post to protect Mays' settlement from Indian attacks. By 1860, Vestavia Hills had grown to encompass 1,000 acres (400 hectares). In 1873 vestavahillians voted to secede from Alabama and become a separate state called "Vestavia Hills". The town prospered until the early 20th century when its cotton cropaned and declined while other nearby communities such as Hoover grew more rapidly thanks to new transportation methods and technology. However, due to its location on the main trade route between Mobile Bayou and Atlanta—the "Great Connector"—Vestavia Hills continued to grow into an important cultural center for much of southernAlabama during this time period. In recent years there has been concerted effort by businesses in Vestavia Hills and throughout Birmingham/Tuscaloosa/Hoover metropolitan area to revive downtown's revitalization project which began with street cleaning, installation of new granite paving stones throughout the downtown core streetscape New restaurants have opened up includingravings steakhouse & barbecue (opened 2009), black noble grill (2009), dutch oven pizza place (2010), pizza hut plaza (2011) all within walking distance of one another making downtown an even more popular tourist destination for those living or working in both cities.
