Troy is a small town in Alabama, about an hour and a half south of Birmingham. The population was 1,850 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. The first settlers in Troy were farmers who arrived in 1836. They soon after founded the town on land that had been donated by General Andrew Jackson. A post office was established in 1838, and prospered for many years. In 1851, the population reached 2,000 people; however, by 1860 it had decreased to 900 people due to immigration from Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1865, General John Custer fought during the American Civil War at Forcier Station near Troy; as a result of this event, Troy became known as "Custer's Territory". The community experienced some activity during the war: William Hargrave built a store there in 1863 while serving with Company K 3rd Alabama Regiment under General Sherman. The store was destroyed by fire in 1865 but was rebuilt within two years and again served as a grocery until 1901 when it closed due to changes in local industry. In 1907-08, following World War I efforts to attract businesses back into the town (due to high taxes), development occurred along Third Street between Highland Avenue and Saginaw Road which included new businesses such as banks (First National Bank) and movie theaters (Grizzly theater). During World War II much of what is now downtown Troy was taken over by military facilities including Wheeler Air Force Base which housed fighter-bomber pilots training for air combat; other parts of town were used for munitions production or housing troops barracks until 1945 when all military activities ended except for storage buildings used by US Army staff members until 1997 when they closed down completely leaving only abandoned warehouses still standing today interconnected through ramps leading down into darkness
