The name came from General Breckinridge's brother, Lieutenant Colonel Huey Hebert Breckinridge, who served with distinction in the Mexican–American War and during Reconstruction in America. After World War II, industry plummeted in Hueytown due to off-shore oil production; however, it has since rebounded with new businesses such as manufacturing (used cars and parts), healthcare (including dentists and veterinary clinics), educational institutions (a large Baptist church and three high schools), and professional services (such as law enforcement). The town has a rich cultural heritage that has been passed down through its residents for generations: local agriculture played an important role in early subsistence culture; African Americans were enslaved here until 1865; military service during both world wars helped contribute to cultural diversity; and today's citizens celebrate traditional values such as hard work, family values, Christianity, education reform/government corruption awareness Week each year.

Hueytown is located in Jefferson County, Alabama and has been inhabited by the Cherokee for over 400 years. The community was founded in 1810 by Capt. James A. Hance, who named it after General Louis Hance, the American commander who had helped support the Creek war of 1813-1814. After a series of epidemics that killed many people in early 1800s, General Andrew Jackson ordered a relocation of the Cherokees to other areas in Georgia and Tennessee. Most of the community's residents were relocated to what is now Nacogdoches, Texas. In 1837, Hueytown became part of Alabama after it was bought from its Cherokee occupants by Colonel John Crain as part of a land sale involving much else including parts of ironclad Fort Abraham Lincoln and other strategic resources around Mobile Bay. In 1840, Captain Hance posthumously donated another 2 acres (0.8 km2) to Hueytown which then became known as "The George". By 1850, only about 50 people lived there; most had moved away during the 1830s Epidemics that decimated much of rural Alabama at that time. In 1874, when Mobile County was created from portions of Jefferson and Montgomery Counties following their merger into Alabama, Hueytown received an addition block (numbered 204th Street NW). It remained an agricultural village until 1969 when it became one of several small towns within Mobile County annexed by Tallahassee Township due to population growth within that municipality; since then Hueytown has slowly become more developed with some new retail businesses opening up along 20th Street NW between US-431 and 24th Avenue NW near State Fair Park area; also built are two parks - Big Game Preserve on 20th StreetNW opposite SH-3 exit ramp off I-565 & University Boulevard NE (opened Spring 2007), also home to historical markers associated with Indian Wars fought hereabouts throughout history In recent years we have seen construction going on around town center such as 200 feet wide x 100 feet long Paveway II Bridge over Ala Moana River connecting town center across MLK Blvd/I-565/US431 just east of downtown intersection
Hueytown was founded by John Huey in 1836. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who served as the president of the United States from 1837 to 1841.
