Gulf Shores is a town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,241 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Tuscaloosa metropolitan area. The first incorporated municipality in Tuscaloosa County was Gulf Shores on December 1, 1871. The town's name comes from a shoal of Spanish galleons that anchored there during the early 1800s to trade with Mobile Bay and Florida. Eventually, the shrimpers who ran these vessels would take their catch to market in nearby Mobile or Baldwin City. This entire process took place around Pensacola Cove onshore near modern-day Hillsboro Boulevard and US-19/501W (Pensacola Avenue). One account of how Gulf Shores got its start tells of two men named John and James Dowling coming ashore from their boatload of shrimp after a storm had struck Mobile Bay. They saw an opening in the bluff and started building a dock out of old driftwood so they could bring their seafood to market directly from shore instead of having to leave it at anchor each time they wanted to sell. This business model soon became common throughout much of Alabama as fishermen began landing their catches anywhere along Pensacola Cove's exposed shores during storms or when no one else was available to take them offloaded becauseboats were being built elsewhere for other purposes at this time.
