The town was founded by Baptist missionaries in 1881. The first post office was established in 1882 and the first store opened in 1886. In 1901, Calera had a school and a Methodist church. In 1907, the town had a sawmill and two stores. By 1920, there were only three businesses left and one-third of the population lived below poverty lines. In 1955, Calera became an incorporated municipality with its own government and mayor. The first municipal library was opened in 1957 and the current library building was constructed in 1978. In 1984, Calera annexed neighboring towns of University Park to form a "new" city with increased services for residents of both towns combined into one municipality which still exists today without any boundaries between them
